PHOSPHONATES
In the processes of detergency and washing, water can be too hard because of the contents of calcium and magnesium. In this situation the detergency is more complicated, since the surfactants tend to bind to these salts and they do not capture the particles of dirt. Phosphates and phosphonates reduce the concentration of magnesium and calcium salts, so the detergent product can be effective.

Like phosphates, also silicates and hydroxides reduce the water hardness (“builder” function),

Like phosphates and other products, also the sequestering agents (also called chelanting agents) and dispersing agents have the function of binding with calcium and magnesium salts that are present in the hard water, so the efficiency of surfactants and the cleaning power of the product are preserved.

Surfactants are chemicals that, having a hydrophilic side and a hydrophobic side, tend to spread over the surface of liquids and to reduce surface tension.
This surfactant effect is essential in the detergency, since it enables the separation and removal from surfaces of substances normally insoluble, that cannot be removed in another way.
